Drivers on KY 94 west of Murray face a detour beginning Tuesday, May 26, when the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet closes a section of the highway in Calloway County for bridge rehabilitation work. The closure covers the stretch between KY 783 and Hudson Road near the Oaks Country Club, at mile point 6.44 over Haynes Creek.
Jim Smith Contracting, the prime contractor, will replace the existing bridge substructure. The cabinet estimates completion by the end of July, weather permitting—a window of roughly nine weeks. No official alternate route has been designated; motorists are asked to self-detour.
The most direct alternative routes add several miles to trips between Murray and communities to the west, including Lynn Grove and Coldwater. Drivers commuting to and from jobs in Murray, or traveling toward Mayfield on US 45, will likely feel the inconvenience most acutely during peak hours.
Haynes Creek Bridge is one of hundreds of aging spans across western Kentucky that carry state highway designations but were built to standards now considered insufficient for modern traffic loads. The Transportation Cabinet has been working through a backlog of such projects across District 2, which covers Purchase Area counties including Calloway, McCracken, Graves, and Marshall.
Substructure replacement—the concrete piers, abutments, and footings that bear the load of the bridge deck—is a more extensive repair than simple resurfacing or deck patching. It typically signals that an inspection found structural deficiencies rather than just surface wear.
KYTC advises motorists to watch for construction signage and to plan extra travel time through late July.
