Calloway County's girls track and field programme has won a lot of things. On Saturday at the University of Kentucky, it won the one that mattered most.
The Lady Lakers claimed the KHSAA Class 2A Track and Field State Championship, ending a 12-year title drought with a performance that dominated the field despite persistent rain throughout the afternoon. Calloway finished with 68 points, 14 clear of runner-up Elizabethtown.
The winning margin was built across the programme. Sophomore Addie Overbey took gold in the 100-metre hurdles and silver in the long jump. Senior captain Maya Thornton won the 800 metres with a personal best of 2:14.3. The 4x400 relay team — Thornton, Overbey, Gracie Collins, and Ava Duncan — anchored the scoring with a first-place finish in 3:58.1, the fastest relay split recorded by a western Kentucky school this season.
Head coach Dana McKeel, who has led the programme for nine years, said the team had targeted the state meet after finishing second in 2025. "They've been thinking about this since November," she said after the ceremony. "Every single workout."
The title comes three weeks after the Lady Lakers also won the First Region championship, making Calloway the only school in western Kentucky to sweep both regional titles across the major spring sports this year. The programme returns seven of its top eight scorers next season.
Calloway County's boys team finished fifth, a result that would typically draw headlines. On Saturday, it barely warranted a mention.
