Southern Illinois eliminated the third-seeded Racers 9-7 in a semifinal elimination game at Johnny Reagan Field, ending Murray State's quest to defend its Missouri Valley Conference championship and closing the season at 33-27. The Salukis advance to the MVC championship series; Murray State, despite carrying the highest seed of any home team in the bracket, exits short of the championship round it won a year ago.
The defeat capped a punishing 48 hours for the Racers, who had positioned themselves for a deep run earlier in the week. Murray State opened the tournament Wednesday with a 6-4 win over No. 6 Illinois State, then knocked off second-seeded Indiana State 3-2 Thursday night when Kainen Jorge — the Racers' most reliable bat throughout the postseason — drove in all three runs and lined a tie-breaking double down the right-field line in the late innings.
By Friday, Murray State sat one win from the championship series. UIC, the No. 1 seed, blocked that path with a 6-5 victory in Game 7 — close enough to sting, narrow enough to keep the Racers in contention via the double-elimination format. That set up Saturday's loser-out matchup with Southern Illinois.
The Salukis pushed across runs early and never trailed in the elimination game, surviving a late Murray State push that brought the tying run to the plate but no closer.
